Sino-US high-level symposium held in Beijing

 With the approval of the China Association for Science and Technology, Beijing Association for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health, Chinese Committee for Alzheimer’s Disease International(ADI-China) and Beijing Association for Alzheimer’s Disease (BAAD) welcome Dr. Maria Carrillo, the chairman of the U.S. Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Science and Technology Committee, to China. The “Sina-US high-level academic discussion forum-Alzheimer’s Disease Academic Communicate Symposium ”, which was in the charge of ADI-china and BAAD, was held in Beijing Union Medical College on November 18, 2009. The theme of this meeting is Early diagnosis of dementia-biological markers and neuroimaging studies.

        The meeting was chaired by Shuli-Sheng, the vice president of adi-china. Yingnan-Liang, the vice minister of International Department of the China Association for Science and Technology, Miaoyun-Guo, the director of the Ministry of Health, and ChangEn-Wang, the director of NSFC, had given speeches repectively. As the secretary of the conference, Dr. Hongzheng-Wang, who is a professor of Beijing Union Medical College, introduced the participants: there were 25 experts who represented about 20 units participated in the high-level seminar. The units were the U.S. Alzheimer's Disease Association, Chinese Committee for Alzheimer’s Disease International(ADI-China), Beijing Association for Alzheimer’s Disease (BAAD), Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing Xuanwu Hospital, Beijing Tiantan Hospital, Peking University of Life Sciences, Beijing Union Medical College, Shanghai Institute of Material Medica, Institute of Laboratory Animalsciences, CAMS&PUMC, Tongji Medical College in Wuhan and National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products.

Professor Jun Wang introduced the dementia research coverage, research projects, types and overall situation of study in China firstly. Besides, he introduced the current situations including influences of the activities held by Alzheimer’s Disease academic organization, website construction, book publishing and science education activities.

Experts introduced domestic situation of AD imaging studies and research discoveries, they proposed that changes in endocrinal cortex might be the potential basis for early diagnosis of AD. The expert from Peking Union Medical College reported that nerve transfer dosage into the substance of the brain or spinal cord can be an effective treatment for AD. One research group in Shanghai found a monomer chemical composition extracted from herbs might be a new effective drug for AD. Clinical experts talked about the current research situation of AD cases in pedigrees and genetic screening.

U.S. Science and Technology Committee chairman Dr. Maria Carrillo’s speech covered five aspects: 1. The task of the U.S. Alzheimer’s Disease Association; 2. Association’s efforts in scientific research; 3. Early diagnosis of AD; 4. The efforts made by WW-ADNI; 5. International research fund projects.

All the deputies have been speaking actively and all the participants had a serious discussion. Dr. Maria Carrillo said that scientists all over the world are welcome to apply for international research funds and U.S. Agency for International Scientific Research Fund is open to all scientists.

Finally, Dr. Maria took photos with all the participants.

ADI -china and BAAD understood the U.S. ADNI implementation methods and steps, the past five years of the development process and the next five-year targets via communicated with U.S. AD organizations and specific seminars.

The American scientists’ visit played an important role in enhancing bilateral academic exchanges in the future and establishment of horizontal linkages. It also moaned a lot for promoting scientific research in Alzheimer’s disease study in our country.
